Welcome to Mt Hope
ONCE A COPPER MINING TOWN!
Copper ore was discovered in 1873 on Coan Downs, and in its heyday Mt Hope boasted a population of 3,000 people. The local population is increased from time to time with itinerant workers who cut broom brush and cypress pine logs for vineyards. It is also a popular spot to be visited by apiarists when the mallee is in flower.
MUST SEE & DO
- Drop in to the Mount Hope Hotel to catch up with the locals
- Visits to the old mines can be organised where Crystals can be fossicked
A jocular warning from the locals – a nip from the “Mount Hope Flea” requires that you return each year on holiday as an antidote for the sting.
